Josh Underwood serves as the Director of Public Relations at Jacksonville State University, where he oversees all internal and external communication from the University administration. A strategic communicator with more than 20 years of experience in higher education, he leads presidential and executive messaging, crisis communications, major announcements, and the University’s overall storytelling efforts. Josh also serves as editor of GEM of the Hills, Jax State’s alumni magazine, directing its editorial vision and content strategy.
Before joining the President’s Office in 2024, Josh spent nineteen years in Jax State Athletics, including eight as Associate Athletics Director for Media Relations. In that role, he managed all media activity for the University’s 18 varsity sports, guided the transition of the football program to the Football Bowl Subdivision, and developed the framework for Jax State’s broadcast operations on ESPN+.
A tireless collaborator and trusted advisor, Josh brings deep experience in media relations, strategic planning, crisis response, and institutional communication. He holds a bachelor’s degree in print journalism from Troy University and is a member of the Alabama Sportswriters Association Hall of Honor.
